Still Lives: Stories in Profile

My subjects are chosen for their distinctive features. In these portraits, I celebrate the contours of face, the qualities of hair and other prominent traits. The profiles I create are an elegant and mysterious simplification. As a photographer, the more limited depth constraints of a profile are challenging. I use natural directional lighting to highlight topography, creating texture and dynamics. One senses a person’s courage and vulnerabilities.
I seek to capture a personality distilled to its strongest form. Rarely do we look at others or ourselves from this side view. These sui generis portraits reveal their character’s souls. Each profile is a discovery as I set out to record the moment when my subject’s inner self emerges, direct and stunning.

Lynn Karlin is an award winning fine art photographer living on the coast of Maine. Her still lifes and portraits show in galleries both nationally and internationally. Three years ago, she began the human portrait series Still Lives: Stories in Profile to capture a personality distilled to its strongest form. Rarely do we look at others or ourselves from this side view.
