San Lazaro - La Promisa (Series)
DESCRIPTION
On December 17th 2019, like every year, a procession is held towards the Sanctuary of El Rincòn, a village 25 km from Havana, Cuba. Many pilgrims leave from Santiago de Las Vegas 5 kilometers away performing heavy rituals of penance, like advancing on their knees or on their back. In this traditional procession the figure of the Catholic saint, San Lazaro, and that of an African divinity intersect into who in the Cuban santeria bears the name of Babalù Ayè which is the protector of the sick and suffering. This Cuban devotion originates from the Yoruba tribe’s religion from Nigeria. The members of this tribe were imported as slaves for work into the sugar production plants and arrived in Cuba carrying their religious beliefs which have been preserved thanks to the identification of the "orishas" with the saints of the Catholic religion.
AUTHOR
My name’s Roberto Scordino and I’m a professional photographer born and based in Rome.
I started to photograph only at the end of 2015 but I have worked for a long time with multimedia projects working with multinational institutions and brands and have been a VJ starting in 1999 back to the times of vhs.
For years I have been interested in socio-anthropological research in the world of subcultures.
In the last years I studied photography, among others, with awards-winners photographers like Paolo Marchetti and I am graduated in the Masterclass held by Fausto Podavini and Giovanni Cocco.
I love most landscape photography and reportage as a way of storytelling.
Relatively new at photography I’m working very hard to master all aspect of it.
