Despite our tendency to believe what we see, our percepts are only hints of what’s really there at any point of time. Our senses have natural limits, our minds have finite capacity, and we convert incoming information through filters built from narrow prior experience. Add to that the constancy of change and, though we depend on them to navigate life, the judgements we make about ourselves, other people, and other things are always debatable. Given this, it’s generally good to approach life with a bias toward curiosity and exploration rather than knowing and expectation.
Intended to inspire curiosity and exploration, the photos in this series are part of a larger set that explores the range of potential photographic impressions of a single 15 square foot space on the surface of a creek. Produced from that spot over a period of months, they display different reflections dependent on things like point of view or time of day, different patterns dependent on varying rates of the water’s flow, and different photographic characteristics dependent on my interests and decisions. Ultimately, while the range of possibilities is certainly finite, viewers should gain the impression that it’s so large it might as well be infinite.
