I have always been drawn to Vermeer, J.´s paintings, and I borrowed, "Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window" (c1657-1659), as my inspiration to making this picture, for in recreating my own version, I discovered what it was which resonated with me.
What struck me initially, was a sense of how time stands stil: so much has changed, yet seemingly so little in the last 400 years. It felt surreal, as if I had stepped into a time machine which was warped: I could relate to how familiar his setting appeared to me, yet it felt like a contradiction, as it should have appeared more archaic.
What has stayed with me in observing his painting, especially in the light of the pandemic, is the contradiction in how technology has allowed me to remain connected to the outside world, but at the same time feel so detached from it, a sense of unrest envelopes me, for I question my reality: by using technology as a means to connect to friends and events, ironically I also feel more disconnected to what is real and removed from what is familiar. It is this surreal existence which is unsettling.
