Blood and Milk (Series)
DESCRIPTION
The Hamer are an ethnic community inhabiting southwestern Ethiopia, in the territory east of the Omo Valley. They have villages in Turmi and Dimeka. Cattle and goats are at the heart of Hamer life. In the dry season, entire families go to live in the grazing fields with their herds, where they survive on the milk and blood of livestock.
This series was taken in September 2019.
I went with a Hamer family to join this ancestral practice.
Picture 1. The Hamer family gathers in the cow pen with first lights of the day.
They select a cow and while two men grab the animal another shoots the neck.
Picture 2. As they have failed the first attempt, there is a change in roles. So another man loads an arrow in the bow and targets the neck. This is the very moment when the new archer releases the arrow.
Picture 3. After several attempts, finally they succeed. This is the moment when the right shot has injured the neck and the blood starts to pour.
Picture 4. They collect the pouring blood.
Picture 5. After mixed with milk they drink the warm blood.
