Botanical Reflections (Series)
DESCRIPTION
This series of 5 floral portraits, "Botanical Reflections" is a study in light, movement and form. I find particular interest seeing flowers in black in white because it is then not the color that draws the viewer in, but the composition. I go to great lengths to find flowers that are pure, preferably taken directly from the plant from which they were growing. Many of my subjects are carefully grown in my care so I can whisk them away to be photographed at any given moment. Each of these floral portraits is a compilation of different photos combined into one. Using different focal lengths in one shoot allows me to capture all the beautiful and often unseen detail that simply cannot be appreciated with one shot. This series of 5 has a range of 17 to 37 images combined into one in any given portrait. I choose to use a reflection of each portrait because I wanted to add to the complexity of the overall composition.

Amy’s photographs are the fusion of her deep appreciation of nature instilled by her parents, especially her father, a life-long love affair with photography and over 20 years of practicing graphic design. Having taken several college classes in photography in the 80s, Amy was able to establish a foundation and understanding to build from. A floral design course in Paris, France also greatly influenced her appreciation of flowers and their individuality. Amy currently resides in Florida with her husband.
Amy Ouderkirk’s floral portraits are striking studies of beauty and form. Through measured composition and dramatic lighting, Amy brings her subjects to life with a sense of powerful elegance. Naming the majority of her floral portraits after women, her style is unique in her ethereal, detailed, yet minimalist capture. One can clearly see when viewing her subjects that the works of Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams and Mapplethorpe have all influenced her style of work.
