Inspired by the work of Hokusai or Masanao Abe’s Studies on Mount Fuji, I chose the most iconic mountain in Madrid to observe. It is called “El Yelmo”. A 150m magma bubble known scientifically as granitic batholith.
I wanted to study it as both science and art have done through centuries, bringing both languages into the analysis of this magnificent spots in nature. I studied its formation, I slept several nights there to catch its last and first light, I climbed it to feel the texture, and mostly I was always humbled by it.
One of the things that I was mostly enamored by, was to realize this plutonic rock had been in fact a sort of foundation, root, of another previous mountain. The idea of this root flourishing like a sprout was incredibly appealing to me. As if its beauty was guarded for centuries underground, waiting for it’s time to flourish.
The scientific name for this in Spanish means literally that – afloramiento granítico -.
I am drawn to the subtlety of it. Mountains are organic moving creatures, just no willing to be obvious about it. It makes me remember that beautiful things don’t ask for attention.
