I am always searching for what I call "Raw Earth", i.e. parts of the planet worn away and recently exposed, geological evidence of cataclysmic events long passed, as well as currently active parts of the planet like hot springs and active lava flows. These places allow me to see and feel a kind of connection to the Earth, and to appreciate it not just as our home, but what it actually is; a living planet orbiting a star in space which we happen to have the privilege of traveling on.
This series of photographs depicts clay deposits naturally colored by iron oxide. The formations are in a constant state of erosion, revealing more color as time passes. The pastel colors embedded in these formations are unique, not unlike layers in a cake. The colors run after rainfall leaving streaks down the otherwise chalky white rock. I am enamored by the combination of texture and pastel color, as well as the strangeness of this landscape.
