Located in Ekurhuleni in the east of Gauteng, near the neighbourhood of Springs, the Blesbokspruit is one of the largest wetlands in the highveld region of South Africa.
The wetland is a high conservation priority as it forms an important component of one of the tributaries of the Vaal River and is a bird watchers paradise. The area is noted for being a bird watchers paradise with more than 220 species to be found including Lesser and Greater Flamingo and supports roughly 20 000 water birds each year. The area was accredited RAMSAR status and is a Wetland of International Importance.
Behind the shot: This image was taken hand-held out of the window of our specially modified high-wing photographic aircraft. The aircraft was chosen not only for its range and fuel economy but also because it is exceptionally quiet. When photographing animals from above seldom do we disturb them. In fact, in most instances they seem blissfully unaware that we are orbiting above them.
