China, Wuhan of 11 million, was locked down for two months starting in late January in a draconian measure that helped stamp out the virus at its initial epicentre. Hubei province and its capital city Wuhan accounted for most of China’s 83,531 new coronavirus cases and 4,634 deaths (The Chinese government official said in May).
More than 37 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,078,072 have died, and wreaking havoc on the global economy as governments imposed lockdowns to rein in its spread, according to a Reuters tally. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
