The word drought instantly brings image of dry, parched land, no rainfall, crop failures, starvation and bad living conditions which in turn often led to intense food insecurity. Due to increasing global temperature day by day and uncontrolled use of ground water outbreaks appear to be exacerbated during the dry season, with crop yields declining at an alarming rate and the shortage of safe drinking water.
Drought is one of the major environmental stresses in the north of Bangladesh that drastically limits of safe drinking water, transportation and grain yield of rice, a staple food of Bangladeshi people. Due to drink dirty and unsafe water diarrheal diseases, trachoma, intestinal worm infections, stunted growth among children and numerous other deleterious outcomes from chemical contaminants like arsenic and lead. People call the period of death and disaster.
This causes a lot of people to become unemployed and fall into acute food shortage between late August to end of December. During this interim period, there are no alternative agricultural activities left for people and the small non-agricultural sector cannot absorb the seasonally unemployed labor force. Hence, food insecurity in the region is associated with yield reduction in rice and non-availability of wage employment.
