From a young age I was submerged into my culture. Growing up, stories of a surreal place created the images of my parents’ homeland. Greece, its history, its beauty, and its giving nature has been ingrained within me and has had a large influence in my work. These pieces were inspired by the Dodecanese, named the 12 islands, a group of many small islands in Greece. Over the years, these islands have been a place of escape, serenity and certain simplicity.
Each piece is made of several photos from various islands to create a surreal perspective of the Dodecanese. Surrealism provides an escape from the reality we know; but does not make it any less real. An opportunity to reenvision the world we live in without limitation.
Each piece is composed of images from several different places I have gone, and comes together to create a physically unattainable place. The longer a piece is studied, the clearer it becomes that nothing is perfect; surrealism and reality have little differences, just a slight change in perspective.
