The New Naked
A psychologically inspired analysis of the subject of protective masks.
In my series “The New Naked” I work with three aspects: nudity, mask and closeness.
In these portraits, human nudity meets the protective mask and lifts it to a new level by an unusual combination of the everyday context.
With this project, I would like to find out whether closeness remains when wearing masks, whether expression and interpersonal contact still take place and whether the masks are perceived as protection or blockage. Detached from the question of the effectiveness of the masks in everyday life, I focus on the psychological perspective.
The series "The New Naked" was created within four days in early June 2020. It consists of 54 formally identical portraits of people wearing a corona protective mask despite being naked. It was first shown in September 2020 at Simone Menne Gallery in Kiel, Germany. Printe were Hahnemühle Fine Art Prints in 60x40 cm.
The title is based on the title "The New West" by Robert Adams, who dealt with the change in the American landscape through uncontrolled expanding suburbs. "The New Naked" deals with the change in nudity and closeness caused by the corona virus.
