I like to create a mysterious and moody atmosphere with light as it interacts with my subjects in the environment. I prefer to use natural light, which creates a soft, romantic quality difficult to achieve with studio lighting. Natural light brings out the natural, innate beauty of the subject. With studio light, however, I can create a more edgy low-key light and play with lines and shadows.
I am inspired by the 17th century Dutch painters and their exquisite use of light. Vermeer’s paintings generally featured windows, and he would utilize the natural light shining in to create an illuminated image. His paintings highlight the purity of light and form and present a timeless sense of dignity.
