The Popess (Series)
DESCRIPTION
My photo series "The Popess" (a total of 12 photos) is about the fascinating legendary figure of Pope Joan. Their contradiction and deception are staged through optical illusions. These suddenly emerge in the series and gain more and more importance, similar to her own secret: A woman in disguise at the head of a patriarchal society and environment, which she had misled. Frame by frame, the pope dives deeper into her new role until she finally gets one and at the same time lost in her entanglements and camouflage. The amalgamation of contemporary, technological devices with the historical figure of the Popess is intended to represent her insatiable thirst for knowledge and urge for research and education. Which has led her to the papal throne, despite all resistance. I would like to express my gratitude to Father Marcel and Father Martin from Melk Abbey in Lower Austria, who made original baroque church vestments from the 17th century available to me. Likewise, with the Zweirad Center Hentschl GmbH in Krems, my professors Rita Newman and Martin Dörsch and with my great model Stella Aschauer. I dedicate this series to my beloved father Josef, who recently passed away. Thank you. Andreas Haubner
