I am attracted to the active tension in images that capture motion in the inherently static medium of still photography. With my ongoing project, Impermanence, I examine the movement of the sea and the surfers immersed within it who harness the energy of the waves. In this study of time and timing, I look to expand movement by slowing down speed, revealing in its breadth the space between what is seen and what is felt.
After years of studying ballet and expressing myself through physical movement, I have brought this curiosity and discipline to capturing images of the sea. In this series, I explore the intertwining duet of the human form dancing with the motion of the waves. While George Balanchine said, “Ballet is music made visible,” I view surfing as the sea made visible. The inherent qualities of the ocean, its ever-changing conditions, movement, and reflection of light, from moment to moment, provide a unique mirror into our transitory nature and shared essence of impermanence.
*All photographs are single captures except #1038, which is an in-camera double exposure. No photo manipulation was used.
