One-leg rowing and fishing technique is a tradition that belongs to the Intha people of Myanmar who live around Inle Lake (Burmese: အင်းလေးကန်), a freshwater lake located in the Nyaungshwe Township of Taunggyi District of Shan State, in Myanmar (Burma).
The traditional fisherman still use the leg rowing technique which they stand at the stern and wrap one leg round an oar whilst gripping the hull of the boat with the other foot. They balance themselves on one end of the boat, manipulate the net with their hands while rowing the boat.
Leg-Rowing Fishermen are use equipments such as a ‘saung’ a cone basket made from bamboo, and a vertical panel of netting called a ‘htaung pite’ to catch the fish.
The fisherman puts the conical bamboo frame in the water with the net stretched over it. The lake is shallow and he’s able to push the frame into the weeds and mud at the bottom, trapping any fish inside. He then releases the net to capture the fish.
