Sabats of Yazd (Series)
DESCRIPTION
In Iran, Yazd is well-known for its old and historical premises which have been inscribed as world heritage on UNESCO. This photo collection contains a number of structures called "Sabat" in this ancient city. Sabat is a roofed passage that has been built for thousands of years in Iran desert cities such as Yazd. Sabat functions as a barrier against severe and tough climate of the desert. In summer, they cast shadow and provide cool spots for pedestrians and residents. Also in winter they function usefully as shields for rain and snow. Some Sabats are very long, therefore, some skylights are devised in the ceiling to ensure light passages . The combination of light and shade, as the result of skylights, can create a spectacular view.
