Conceptual nominee

This work is a three-dimensional hologram on a background that is drawn directly onto photographic paper using chemicals in the darkroom. It works with the true character of the materials; not just to reproduce images, but to be an original image itself. The idea behind this is that our society tends to standardize and prevent people from breaking free from norms and cultures. As long as people do not harm others, in my opinion they have the right to be free with all their heart. Through my work, I want to convey my belief that each of us can have a perfect and complete existence and that we must find our true selves throughout our lives.

I am Seung-Ja Kim, born in 1969 in Korea.
I majored in photography at Seoul Institute of the Arts and in media arts at University of applied sciences in Bielefeld and at HfG ZKM Karlsruhe in Germany.
From 1998 to 2000, I taught photography at Handong University in the department of photography.
I returned to Germany again in 2001 and graduated from Aufbaustudium (MA) in Karlsruhe.
After graduating, I got married in 2002. I am raising two children, and now that they are growing up, my artistic life takes off again.
Through my photography I hope to give people new strength and energy through contemplation while discovering new things in the arduous reality of everyday life.
