Undertow explores my world of dreams, memory, alternate realities, and parallel lives.
These pictures were born somewhere beyond the reach of my conscious self; images that
I have then attempted to translate into photography,
Under the surface of every life lies a multitude of unlived possibilities. Dreams and
memories come together to form some of these unlived lives, allowing us a glimpse of
what could have been. Do these imagined lives somehow shape our actual reality?
Do the images we form in the unexplored corners of our minds influence us more than
we think, or is it the other way around – that we shape and remold our memories and
dreams to make life richer, safer, or just easier to make sense of?
I’ve experienced both sadness and joy. I lost my father
at a young age, and then lost a child at birth. These losses have, of course, shaped my
sense of self, as well as of my non-existing self – I would be a different person from the
one I am now had those two remained in my life.
These images are made with collodion process and old expired polaroid film using large format camera.
