My series By a Thread considers the uncertainty of transition, deconstructing the feelings that arise in response to rules and change as experienced during the pandemic. It reflects on our need for order in the midst of disorder and how we feel as we navigate these conflicting impulses. Though moths are oft-maligned insects, I see the beauty of their transformation and innate attraction to liberation. After such a length of time, we now with some trepidation begin to look outward,, readying to leave the haven of a cocooned world behind, drawn instinctively toward the light that seems just within reach.
By a Thread strives to express a shared experience through visual metaphors. Semi-transparent moths delicately dangle with little to no anchor in the frame—a gesture towards the insecurity of our own relationship with the future. Taut artificial threads delineate rules and safety orders. Haphazard strings intersect, disrupting the certainty of our path and signifying discord. Silk threads suggest a natural arrhythmia that complicates our impulse to reach the light. Yet, as with the luminescence of the moths’ wings against the backdrop of negative space, we have within ourselves the capacity to move forward into places of community and connection.
