It's winter now and once again we‘re stuck in lockdown. My nocturnal excursions have long become a habit, the search for shape in the dark a routine. There are hardly any colors left to be exposed by the street lights, except for the conifers, the evergreen foliage, scattered berries and forgotten apples.
The winter night is barren, but is it also unwelcoming? Not at all!
Contrary to initial expectations, it's significantly brighter, especially when there is snow. When the light of the city is reflected by the low-hanging clouds and bounces off the snow-covered ground, there is no longer any real darkness.
The winter night envelops the walker more kindly, more good-naturedly, even more homelike than the spring night. May the winter days be dark, the winter nights are not.
Thus LOCKDOWN WINTER NIGHTS is more than a mere continuation of what was begun in LOCKDOWN SPRING NIGHTS. This is less about discovering the beautiful in the gloomy, but about the reversal of the seemingly expectable; it is about turning into the opposite – the dark becomes bright, the monochrome colorful.
Photographically, this idea is taken into account through drastic color shifts and the reversal of some images into negative.
