During the shoot, which had to be postponed several times due to Covid, we knew that Jude's adoptive mother was suffering from cancer and would die soon. The Losing Faith/Madonna with the Roses series is a tribute to his mother, the symbolism of the rose is central here.
In almost every culture, the rose has had a quasi-mystical value. In the Greco-Roman world, the rose symbolized beauty, love and the season of spring; it also indicated the fragility of beauty and hinted at death, so that the pagan Roman festival of Rosalia was a celebration of the dead. In Christian iconography the rose stood for an eternal paradise, but also as a symbol for martyrs. Not surprisingly, the rose is considered the ultimate botanical representation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
