‘Where Distance Kept is Love's Measure’ was photographed June 2020 - July 2021, during London’s lockdowns - looking at how Londoners were enduring, adapting and overcoming the challenges of a pandemic. The project is about love, endurance and hope during the pandemic. Set in London parks and public spaces, the project captures people adapting to our new collective normal.
During my recovery from COVID-19 in the first 2020 lockdown, I would regularly take our 4-year-old son to one of London’s parks. It was a very conflicting experience to walk empty streets and then enter a park to find ourselves surrounded by many strangers. As we were told to maintain a 2-metre distance, we began to negotiate the spaces between us and learn new ways of interacting with each other. Since every day spent at home seemed to be telling the same story over and over, I decided to venture outside and take part in this elaborate game of balancing fear with the need for closeness. Documenting a small part of the pandemic would also be a way for me to at least retain some memories from this period and keep my own mental health in check.
