Saintes is a city of history and architectural heritage. Little known and little valued, it is the ancient capital of the Roman province known as Aquitania. The city is today rich in old works left by the Romans, then others left by the Middle Ages. Saintes is thus a Roman sister of Arles.
In the center of this city flows a river that Henry IV said was the most beautiful in France. He never came when there was flood. Indeed, the stream has its anger. When 4 to 5 consecutive weeks of rain accumulate, totaling around 250 to 300 mm of precipitation: the river has a major flood. It happens about every 10 years. In November 2019, then in January 2021, blow after blow; the Charente had a strong flood, then an exceptional flood: the third strongest in the last 100 years.
