In 1950s,Petroleum was discovered in Daqing, China and was quickly extracted widely. It was the early days of the People's Republic of China, and there was a high demand for industrial resources such as petroleum to carry out modern construction. To meet the nation's construction demand, the government constructed a large number of factories and oil drilling rigs. More people relocated to Daqing in search of work in the petroleum industry, eventually forming the city.
In this Project, I went through my family archive, and printed them on fabric.I reframe some of the photographs to make the environment more visible while leaving the specific locations unidentified. In my hometown, she worked as a Civil Engineer. I chose some of her older designs and sewed them onto the fabrics, while keeping a portion of my mother's figure on the fabric, including her shoulders, arms, and hands. These body parts are conceptually related to theme such as work and creation. One can imagine the strength in her body by looking at her body and works.
