Experimental nominee

My daughter is an artist who works as a graphic designer. She also studied painting. A few years ago she was diagnosed with depression. Although widely discussed in social campaigns, this illness is still perceived in my environment as an invented problem, a new name for a bad day, or simply laziness. In the Pink Doesn’t Exist I used self-portraits that Wiktoria painted while fighting her depression. I combined them with my photographic portraits that I took of her over the last fifteen years. In this way I received a story of two women who, from different perspectives, try to speak not only of the illness but also about the everyday experience of survival. Wiktoria’s self-portraits from that period were black, white and gray, without color. But as the therapy progressed a pink color began to appear. Quite surprising, considering that my daughter never liked this color! Depression is sometimes called an illness with a beautiful smile and sad eyes, which appear in my photographs only to disappear shortly thereafter -- for example, under a fragment of a photo which saved incorrectly on a memory card, under a layer of spilled wax, or behind Japanese tissue paper. I am a student of Institute of Creative Photography in Opava, gradaute of Wroclaw's Photography School AFA and a memeber or Association of Polish Art Photographers. I run photography workshops in historical techniques such as cyanotype or wet collodion. In my activities, I combine photography with other areas of artistic expression, trying to establish a pictorial intergenerational contact.
