DESCRIPTION
Pat with the head of Chris the Postman (107 words)
This image inspired by the work of Caravaggio. Pat, a retired nurse, is holding the head of Chris, who is a union organiser for the CWU. Chris represents his members therefore is in a similar position to John the Baptist who was a preacher with a large following. Pat is portraying Salome who was represented as a young and beautiful woman, in the modern world age is irrelevant. This image is responding to reactions to changes within society and involving the historical postal system. The image has been created to convey a current modern narrative and, similarly to Caravaggio, is detailing every day people rather than models.
AUTHOR
Debbie Todd is a portrait photographer based in County Durham. Her practise concentrates on telling stories of marginalised people mainly from working class backgrounds in a fine art style. Inspired by old master painters and contemporary photographers, she tries to create images that engage the viewer visually to enable them to understand the story of the subject in their own way.
A mature student, Debbie graduated from the northern school of art with a first class honours degree in photographic practise during the summer of 2022. She is currently studying for her masters at the same institution and is due to graduate September 2023..
Prior to her graduation, Debbie won the Anjool Malde Award and was shortlisted for the AOP student awards and the diversity challenge which was part of the photography show in Birmingham.
She then exhibited at Pineapple Black in Middlesbrough and at D31 Art Gallery in Doncaster during 2022. Debbie created a book of fine art style portraits, from her project the meaning of being different, which has been bought by people all over the UK and even in the US.
She has been a guest speaker at a Red Eye networking event and Hexham Photography Group
