Gathering (Single)
DESCRIPTION
This is a series of layered photographs from several old Kodachrome slides of sky over Blue Hill, Maine onto a straight photograph made from a 5D Cannon of a friend’s summer house on Little Deer Isle in an area called The Colony. Generations have gathered here from all over for the two summer months, July and August, when most people want to be in Maine. It is when lobsters, corn and wild blueberries are plentiful. This empty dining room reflects a moment of anticipation. Mud season is almost over and the people from away are about to descend. But, family gatherings bring a wide range of boisterous joy and drama - hence the clouds I placed on the walls and furniture range in color from grey to bright white. The matriarch, who once presided over the table, is long gone and her children and their growing families are having to relearn how to gather. Not so easy. Familial love compounded by the strain of growing generations is such a mystery. The empty chairs provide rumination points, an invitation, if you will, to the viewer to have a seat at the table.
