Himba and their Cattle (Series)
DESCRIPTION
The Himba are one of the few true nomadic people left in Africa. Their women cover themselves with an orange-reddish otijze paste and add goat-hair extensions to their long plaits. Being cattle rearers in this arid land, cattle not only determine one's social status and eligibility for marriage, they also provide milk and butter which together with maize are their staples. Like the fate faced by many indigneous tribes, the Himba are affected by climate change as well as the encroachment of the modern world and inevitably the days of centuries-old cultural traditions appear to be numbered.
