Less than 500 spirit bears (black bears with recessive genes) are known to exist. Extremely shy, their ghost-like presence in the Great Bear Rain Forest on the coast of British Columbia is revered by Canadian First Nations peoples as a spiritual reminder that the abundance of Spring and Summer is short lived. Winter will follow. Deep and bitter, it will have no mercy on people nor animals that have ignored the spirit bear's warning to prepare adequate shelter and food stocks.
