The Sun Voyager sculpture in Reykjavík represents the promise of undiscovered land, a dream of hope, progress and freedom. The author of the sculpture, Jón Gunnar
admitted being inspired by an old legend and a dream that he once had.
According to this story, Alexander the Great sent a group of his subordinates to find a place where the sun rises from above the horizon. This tribe reached Mongolia but soon they started to miss their homeland. So, they decided to follow the sun until they found the place where it sets behind the horizon. To cross the Atlantic Ocean and find their lost home they built boats and set sail. In this way they discovered Iceland where they gave the beginning of the Iceland nation.
When the sun sets behind the horizon in winter in Iceland, the Sun Voyager has its prow pointed in the exact direction in which Alexander the Great's fearless travellers were supposed to be heading.

Born and raised in Berlin, I have always been a lover of big cities. To this day, I am fascinated by the synergy of historical buildings and modern architecture, which dominates the cityscapes of many metropolises. But even though Berlin is amazing, it drives me more and more into the world. A year in Prague during my studies made me a European citizen and re-ignited my passion for travel.
