I created this as part of an exhibition with the theme “attitude”. I was drawn to the former meanings of it. In old German dictionaries you would find descriptions of attitude meaning “expressive, an artistic impression striving position by living figures”. Quite complicated – people were doing something like pantomime, dancing and acting all together in an artistic way we don’t know anymore - something like living pictures. It could be historic events, tales, or state of minds they were showing. Dictionaries pointing out the importance of the “meaningful moment” and the “emotional state”. Attitude artists were often female, they had to be inventor and medium at the same time.
As a self-portrait artist I know this situation well: being the creator and channelling this idea at the same time while being the model as well. So I decided to create my own way of “living pictures” that show a “meaningful moment”: The self-discovery, a journey we will all take at some time. Starting in the Golden 20s, which represents the hidden self under shining but broken masks. Leading back to the self by travelling back the centuries until we found our true self and become king of ourselves again.
