The photographs were taken at Weston Beach, Point Lobos, California. This is an ongoing project I started several years ago. For those who don't know, Point Lobos is where Edward Weston created many of his iconic images. Weston Beach, in particular, is where his family scattered his ashes. It wouldn't be a stretch to say this is "Holy Ground" as far as the history of photography is concerned.
On a trip to Pacific Grove I thought I would search out Weston Beach and see if I could photograph it in a way that hadn't been done before. Most "classic" photographs of Point Lobos are black and white landscapes. My photographs are "normal" full-frame images. The colors have obviously been altered in Lightroom. Aside from that, they're simple photographs. It's the colors, subject matter, and composition that hopefully make them different.

I have a BA in Photojournalism. I worked briefly as a professional photographer many years ago. I'm mostly influenced by Magnum photographers all the way from Henri Cartier-Bresson to Alex Webb. A Greek Portfolio, by Constantine Manos, continues to have a profound effect on the way in which I see the world and compose every image. In terms of abstract photography Aaron Siskind is my only influence. This is not so much on his work, which I love, but on the idea of abstract photography as a thing unto itself. Lately I've been looking at the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and mid-twentieth-century abstract expressionist painters for direction.
