Echoes of the Looking Glass (Series)
DESCRIPTION
Echoes of the Looking Glass is a one-year exploration of mediated memory using gelatin cubes and image transfer techniques. This work uses the extensibility of gelatin to show the relationship between memory and time. Just as our memories can become fragmented and distorted over time, it is not only a study of materiality and image transfer but also a reflection on the fluidity and impermanence of memory. This project starts with a portrait of myself as a kindergartener is a representation of memory, but by manipulating it using different techniques, I am effectively creating new interpretations and impressions of that memory. With the shadow of memory, my work slowly settles and grows, as if the past continues in a new form in the present. I focused on the process of image transfer and experienced with materiality. I started to focus on transferring images onto unconventional materials. Out of these materials, I particularly fell in love with working with gelatin due to its unique properties, and was fascinated by the texture and its ability to be transformed into different shapes and forms. By using gelatin, I'm tapping into this rich history and exploring the material's properties in new and innovative ways.
