These photos were produced over the course of 25 years. The earliest ones were taken with a Polaroid Image compact, and were used in the book Em obras: história do vazio em Belo Horizonte (Cosac Naify, 1999) [History of the Void in Belo Horizonte]. They are liquefactions of BH.
At the turn of the 2000s, soon after publishing the essay O capim (Wild Grass), I continued the series with pictures of urban grasses and of liquefied Brasília (Federal District), using the same camera. These were physically alterable pictures, because the Polaroid Image ejects “liquid" photos that take minutes to set. Exploring the plasticity of these liquid moments meant tampering with the picture before it could solidify, manipulating the process in such a way as generated a fluid aspect in the resulting photo.
(...) Liquids and Solids is therefore a material essay on this unlikely condition of emulsion, and about how it can be applied to these themes. As Eduardo de Jesus (professor with the Department of Social Communication at the Federal University of Minas Gerais) says in what follows, the essay is radically analogical, with all of its operations occurring within the sphere of photographic material.
