BIG SKIES is, like other works before, first and foremost a juxtaposition of the simplest geometric figure, the circle (or more precisely the surface of the circle) with unpredictable, natural forms, in this case towering cloud formations. This contrast is intensified by various colour effects and finds a model in the landscape and battle paintings of Dutch and British masters of the 17th and 18th centuries – however without the battle, without humans, at times even without a landscape, reduced to a sky billowing with clouds, which, perhaps in anticipation of an approaching storm, is the only drama here. This sky is not merely the background, not an amplifier of the actual theme. It is sufficient unto itself.
Chance plays an essential role here, not only in the formation of the clouds and the photographic gaze directed upwards at the decisive moment. The subsequent work process, the setting of the circles, is also quick and intuitive. The colouring, on the other hand, requires a certain degree of precision in order to create uniformity and coherence between the images.
