"Just pain?" is part of a therapeutic photography project that I’m carrying on with Erica, in response to her inner need to make flow and channel an expressive energy long held and emerged with disruptive force following breast surgery.
In this particular sequence, the primary focus is on the apprehension of suffering that pervaded the months preceding the procedure, punctuated by unresolved inquiries and profound emotional distress.
Breast surgery is a milestone: it separates a first, in which the fear of physical pain flows from a deep inner wound, and an after, which is painted in the knowledge of one’s own body, in a new awareness of oneself and in the desire for expression.
The tangible sign of the scar becomes not only a symbol of this transformation, but also a friend, capable of suggesting questions and new perspectives.
