Celestial Aperture (Single)
DESCRIPTION
Our relationship to astronomical objects is not often made apparent. Occasionally, we are confronted with the immense scale of the spatial relationships in our skies and reminded we are a passengers in a strange cosmic balancing act. In Celestial Aperture, I sought to convey the viewer as an intrinsic element in the photograph by capturing the eclipse through a gap in a sandstone formation, hiking 20 miles over 2 days to find the right location. The grounding effect of the blurred foreground cements the viewer of the photograph as an observer witnessing a transcendent event that has had great significance in every human culture that has witnessed it. Captured from the same vantage point in quick succession, several photographs were stacked to portray the occultation over time, resulting in an image that invites viewers to recognize and consider our unique position in space.
