This photograph aims to bring awareness to the melting of the ice caps. It depicts a massive piece of old ice
dropped into water from the Breidamerkurjokull glacier. The old ice, when it drops, it is like a jewel that can never
be replaced. You can identify it by its ice color. This was around 60/70 years old.
Inhabitants of the area ( Hofn and surroundings) are specially sensitive to the fast disappearance of the glacier
Jökulsárlón lagoon which seems to be about only 100 years more to melt completely.
Ice used to cover 10% of the ground in Iceland. The rapid receding ice is not only rising the water sea level but also
having an impact in the rising of the ground itself. The soil is decompressed by the disappearance of the ice that
crushes it and its enabling the ground itself to rise. This is jeopardizing the population of Hofn itself increasing the
shipwreck possibilities due to a combination of losing water as the gravitational pull of the glacier recess and the
rising of the soil.
Some experts agree that Iceland could be iceless by 2200. The ice will be then the most priced jewel forever gone.
