The enormous Moon-like Burren in County Clare is one of Ireland's most striking landscapes. Here, a cool gray rock engraved with cracks descends into the wild blue Atlantic Ocean. The result is one of nature’s most unusual phenomena: a huge rock surface saturated with rock formations, caves and fossils, as well as an incredible array of flowers, from native species to Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean plants. The story begins in a tropical sea near the equator, includes the development of a major river delta, migration and collision of continents, the expansion and contraction of the polar ice caps and last but not least, the rain that sweeps in from the Atlantic.
The rocks that make up the Burren were all formed during the Carboniferous period between 359 and 299 million years ago.
Magical place - unique and different.
