The series Deities was photographed in the Libyan Desert in April 2022. Specifically, I travelled to the Western Desert, a part of the Libyan Desert that meets the River Nile in the east in Egypt and Libya to the west. A complex process of weathering has over time carved monumental and otherworldly sculptures of limestone. Brought to life by the elements, these giant deities seem to be guarding silently a numinous landscape.
In the uncorrupted space of the desert, we are invited to transcend the limitations of being human and “connect to our inner world.” As Terry Tempest Williams said, “Every pilgrimage to the desert is a pilgrimage to the self. There is no place to hide and so we are found.” For me, the silence of the desert is not about the absence of sound; it is about reconnecting with one’s inner music. The desert becomes a soul-scape.

AUTHOR
Wingfield is a self taught fine art digital photography artist based in London. She draws her inspiration from the natural world. Concentrating on long-term projects, her practice is driven by an urge to uncover and explore the purity and deep mystery of our ecosphere throughout the world and to monumentalise the small and often overlooked flora and fauna that are intrinsic to life on this planet. The work is characterised by an unashamed quest for the beauty infused in landscape and the feeling of awe that it triggers and nurtures. She was awarded bronze in the PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris 2023 in the Nature/ Earth category.
