Open Theme nominee

The ongoing series "Useless?!" documents a process that can be seen regularly on German sidewalks. When bulky waste is collected, the owners have to place the things that they no longer need, that are no longer of value to them, that are defective or no longer presentable, in an orderly fashion in front of the house. More or less functional furniture, appliances, electrical goods, household and garden items, old building materials, carpets, etc. are lined up in front of the property as if for display. For one or two days, people allow a glimpse into their otherwise largely secret private lives. Things that until recently were still in use are now visible to everyone and provide clues as to the stories behind the things that are ready for collection in this combination - children who grow up and leave their parents' home, people who pass away or move into a retirement home, couples who separate, inventory that has become useless and is disposed of by the new owner after buying a house...

While the unremarkable often becomes the subject of contemplation in my work, I try to direct the eye and mind beyond the obvious. I work documentarily or interpretatively, whereby my photographs reflect true nature or the abstract, the seen or the experienced, appear in color or black and white and the image is processed during or after the shooting, camera and computer are working tools similar to a painter's brush or sculptor's chisel; thus, beyond the pure shooting process, a work of art is deliberately created - painting with light, shadow, shapes and colors. Photography is my form of artistic expression.
