Wildlife's only chance of survival is to coexist with 'man', I travelled to the arctic to explore how iconic polar bears live alongside the innuit.
After days of exploration we found 2 bears, what happened next was beyond anything I could have expected.
A mother polar bear and cub have their scent picked up by a huge male bear. The cub makes a rapid exit as the potential danger of a male bear is well understood. The mother stays and greets the male, the male displays fresh battle scars, he had earned the right to court the female. They walk, rest and move around the sea ice as the courtship develops. When they finally settle for a prolonged rest we retire to camp, -20C is too cold for us to remain indefinitely. The following day, to our delight, we spot them. Joy turns to horror as we see that the female has been shot, 2 gun cartridges are nearby. The male had not left her side for a day. Despite our presence, his only focus was his dead mate. The bear mourned, clinging to the blood-stained body. A cub has also lost a mother
