Following a grassland habitat reconstruction, I teamed up with the National Park in a ground squirrel rewilding project. These animals, which had been considered a common one and had played a significant part in the ecosystem, became totally extinct from the region by the 1990s.
From an airport where they were not welcome, we moved 156 ground squirrels to their new home, where they have grown into a 3000 strong, unique population within five years.
After all this time, the regular appearance of rare predators praying them, such as the saker falcon, eastern imperial eagle, and steppe polecat was noticed as well.
To strengthen the condition of the population, the animals are fed seeds periodically in the field when the young emerge from the ground and when they form fat reserves for the winter.
