In 1936 the NS regime in Germany decided in a four-year plan that Germany should become more independent from other countries in every way. Corn would be an essential resource in time of war. Therefore a number of big granaries were built along the rivers of Germany.
Most of these standardised massive buildings, with roofs made of reinforced concrete (to withstand bombs), were converted into residential buildings in the West of Germany after the war. Due to the lack of money in the Eastern part of Germany the reconstruction of two “Reichseinheitsspeicher” in Magdeburg started just in 2020. Both photo-series, "Demolition" und "Reconstruction", were taken in a period of four years. They show that the right part of the building, where 30 metre high silos had been located, was carefully torn down und rebuilt with floors like in the left part of the building. The size and shape of the building have remained the same.
