These two images capture the magic of Iceland’s waterfalls in perfect winter conditions.
At Kvernufoss, the golden sunset aligned flawlessly with the waterfall’s entrance. Standing behind the cascade, the sun appeared directly through the falling water, casting warm hues onto the icy formations below. The soft glow on the frozen ground, combined with the mist rising from the falls, created an almost surreal atmosphere. To capture the full scale of the scene, I created a vertical panorama of five images, each blended from four exposures, ensuring every detail—from the delicate ice formations to the waterfall’s powerful flow—was preserved.
At Skogafoss, nature delivered another breathtaking moment. As the waterfall’s mist filled the air, the setting sun’s light formed a rainbow in front of the cascade. The intricate ice patterns in the foreground added another layer of depth to the composition. Shooting in freezing temperatures, our gear became encased in ice from the mist, but the results were worth it. For this image, I stitched two vertical shots to showcase both the towering waterfall and the detailed textures of the frozen landscape.
Both images highlight the interplay of light, ice, and motion, capturing the untamed beauty of Iceland’s winter waterfalls.
