In 2024, I spent two separate 4-week periods in different seasons in the Valley of the Volcanoes in Ecuador to photograph the imposing, partially still active volcanoes.
The Valley of the Volcanoes is an impressive geographical region in Ecuador, known for its majestic volcanoes and breathtaking landscapes. This region, stretching along the Ecuadorian Andes, is home to some of the highest and most active volcanoes in the world, including Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Reventador and Sangay.
Cotopaxi, one of Ecuador's most famous and active volcanoes, rises majestically to a height of 5,897 meters. Its perfectly shaped cone and frequent eruptions make it a fascinating attraction for adventurers and scientists alike.
Cayambe is the third-highest volcano in the country at 5,790 meters and the only one whose summit lies directly on the equator.
Reventador is one of Ecuador’s most active volcanoes. At 3,562 meters, it is smaller than the other giants, but its frequent eruptions.
Sangay, another extremely active volcano, reaches 5,230 meters and is one of the most active volcanoes in South America. It is located in a remote region and is part of Sangay National Park.
