Though I’ve never been particularly fond of Hwatu cards, one day I found myself struck by a vivid memory of the red card my grandmother used to hold in her hand. Back in the day, grandmothers—our grandmothers’ grandmothers—would not only play Hwatu for amusement but also seek solace and release stress through its fortunes when life seemed overwhelming and paths unclear.
