These dances, very important in the San culture, are at the same time healing rituals, prayers for rain, regeneration of the cosmos in a global catharsis. Ritual trance journeys have been a vital part of shamanic cultures for thousands of years, an echo of prehistory when humans vibrate as nature. The altered state of consciousness reached by the dancers opens up to them the power of the other world, a power used for the whole community. The energy of the songs invades their body and mind, rising up the spine then exploding in the head, inducing visions of geometric shapes followed by hallucinations, the sensation of an out of body journey. This unique experience finds its meaning within their system of beliefs and myths. The shamans then enter another realm and can transform themselves into birds or other animals, visit distant lands and communicate with the spirits of the dead
How to make the invisible visible?
To represent the dissociation of the bodies felt during the trance by the dancers, their entry into another realm, my choice was to overlap long exposures with a short lightening of a flash, while the ambient light was still slightly present.
